Abstract
The main types of strong winds in the Czech Republic are categorised, including the Principal Component Analysis of winter gales of the 20th century. The advantages and drawbacks of documentary evidence of strong winds for the pre-instrumental period are described, including methodological problems related to such data. A chronology of strong winds and windstorms of centuries& in the Czech Lands since 1500 are presented.
