Abstract

Text je záznamem přednášky pronesené při příležitosti Dne filosofie UNESCO 15. 11. 2007. Je inspirován proslulým tvrzením A. N. Whiteheada, podle nějž jsou dějiny evropské filosofie pouze poznámkami k Platónovi. Text poukazuje na to, že podobně jako jiná proslulá tvrzení (Sókratovo "vím, že nic nevím" nebo údajné Tertulliánovo "věřím, protože je to absurdní") je třeba i Whiteheadovu tezi brát spíše jako bonmot než jako zcela vážné tvrzení. Přesto se však autor textu dále zamýšlí nad tím, co činí Platóna zajímavým myslitelem i v dnešní době. Nabízí možné důvody Platónovy přitažlivosti pro laiky, studenty filosofie i specializované badatele o antické filosofii.

Abstract (in English)

The paper is the notation of the lecture delivered on the occasion of the Day of Philosophy UNESCO on 15th November 2007. It is inspired by the famous statement of A. N. Whitehead that the European philosophical tradition consists of a series of footnotes to Plato. The paper shows that this statement is rather a bon mot (analogous to Socrates' 'I know that I know nothing' or Tertullian's 'I believe it because it is impossible') than a serious affirmation. However, the author of the paper tries to show why is Plato an interesting thinker even nowadays, namely for readers without philosophical education, for students of philosophy and for scholars specialized in ancient or Platonic philosophy.
