Abstract

The paper discusses the usage of tenses in news headlines, with a focus on the functions of the simple past tense. It notes the unmarked use of the present tense to conventionally refer to past events and outlines the possible reasons for its use. The marked occurrence of the simple past tense in headlines is identified as (1) the expression of non-recency of a reported event, (2) the backgrounding of a circumstantial event, (3) the marker of an accessed voice, and (4) the effect of the intertextuality of related articles. The past tense in headlines is interpreted as an effort on the part of the writers to redefine the convention-bound headlines into a more reader-oriented style.

Abstract (in Czech)

Článek se zabývá užíváním slovesných časů v anglických novinových titulcích, a to hlavně se zaměřením na funkce prostého minulého času. Zachyceno je nepříznakové užívání přítomného času, který konvenčně odkazuje k minulým událostem. Tento jev je vysvětlován v kontextu Hallidayovské funkční lingvistiky s ohledem na integraci jazykových funkcí. Minulý čas prostý se v novinových titulcích používá příznakově s následujícími motivacemi: (1) vyjádření neaktuálnosti zprostředkovávané zprávy, (2) upozadění události, která není klíčová, (3) signál nepřímé citace jiného aktéra, a (4) důsledek intertextuálního vlivu ostatních článků (fyzicky blízkých a na obdobné téma). Minulý čas v titulcích je interpretován jako snaha autorů mediálních komunikátu předefinovat konvencemi svázané titulky na jazyk, který je čtenářům bližší.
