Besides, pro- and anti-fibrotic factors such as endothelin-1 and nitric oxide, respectively, regulate fibrosis by modulating collagen synthesis and also MMP/TIMP activity. Nowadays, there is thought that progressive remodeling accompanied with changes in the extracellular matrix may lead to severe heart failure.
