One of the promising representative is coplanar dielectric barrier discharge (CDBD or simply CD), which benefits from operating at atmospheric pressure without the need of costly vacuum equipment. Despite the fact that several numerical simulations of the coplanar discharge has been made so far, the systematic experimental study of its ignition, progress and extinction phases are still missing. In order to observe these a close temporally resolved measurement is needed, as the time scale of the phenomena is in the order of tens of ns. The use of intensified CCD camera has been found to be an effective tool for observing the evolution. It was found that at atmospheric pressure in flowing nitrogen atmosphere the luminosity of the coplanar discharge shows glow-like structure. The luminosity is observable even one microsecond after current rising edge, which is an indication of substantial presence of metastable species in the discharge and consequently of certain level of diffusiveness of the discharge. This was proved by the measurements of integral luminosity. ER -
