In the adult CNS, nestin is detectable only in stem cells of the subventricular zone and partly in the choroid plexus. Our study was aimed at the nestin expression in cell lines derived from different types of solid tumors both in children and adults. Using immunodetection methods, nestin expression has been shown in tissue sections and cell lines derived from neuroectodermal tumors (glioblastoma multiforme, neuroblastoma), as well as from malignant fibrose histiocytoma and osteosarcoma. We also focused on the subcellular localization of nestin in the cell lines as described above. Our results brought the direct evidence of the nestin occurrence in cell nucleus in cell lines derived from neuroblastoma and glioblastoma multiforme. These results suggest that localization of nestin in the transformed cells is not limited to the cytoplasm only and this protein may play an important role either in the chromatin organization or in the regulation of gene expression.
