Each of them exhibits some advantages as well as limitations. While a powdered material makes it possible to mix a sample with appropriate binder and/or internal standard, to apply "a standard addition method" or to spike a series of blank samples with a known amount of analytes and thus to prepare matrix-matched calibration, an ablation-based analysis of compact material usually drives at a lack or at least a limited choice of certified reference materials for successful calibration and accurate determination, at a limited choice or even impossibility to use any element as internal standard and, finally, at impossibility to dilute a sample with an appropriate matrix. On the other hand, powdered samples pressed into pellets may exhibit lower resistance to ablation, which results in "drilling" and excessive releasing of material. ER -
