In order to obtain reliable results a method of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LAICP- MS) was combined with an electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). The study has revealed substantial differences in heavy metal content in recent and subrecent fish scales a few years old documenting the extreme rapidity of the diagenesis/fossilization processes.
