This article describes the criminal justice system in the Czech Republic in relation to pre-trial detention. Empirical background information is presented and discussed. Emphasis is put on the legal basis for pre-trial detention, its grounds, length as well as the review procedures. Special regulations are considered with respect to pre-trial detention of vulnerable groups. Attention is payed to juveniles, women and foreigners.
