Historical climatology uses documentary evidence for climate reconstruction. Main types of documentary sources and long instrumental series are characterized and method of climate reconstruction is explained. Temperature and precipitation reconstructions based on documentary evidence are compared with those derived from natural proxies (tree rings). Results are discussed with respect to traditional paradigm of the last millennium climate that was outlined by H. Lamb already in 1960s. Positive and negative features of climate reconstructions that are based on documentary evidence are discussed (method of indexing, high and low frequency signal). Finally perspectives of future sesearch in the field of historical climatology are outlined. ER -
