There are two groups of poly (A) polymerases (PAPs) present in the cell: canonical nuclear PAP, and non-canonical PAPs, that differ in the role they play in cell metabolism. There are 7 homologues of non-canonical PAPs in Homo sapiens. At the moment, they are rather poorly characterized. Recently, the largest homolog TUT4 (ZCCHC11) has been shown to play a role in gene expression regulation via the uridylation of specific miRNAs. Several other homologs, have also been shown to poses uridylation activity, in some cases along with the polyadenylation activity. ER -
