Abstract
The timing of dental development is a crucial issue for forensic anthropologists but methods used in the forensic anthropology and odontology scenario have never been applied on a twin model. The aim of this study was to apply Demirjian’s, Mincer’s and Cameriere’s method for dental age estimation from radiographs of monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs in order to observe how much dental age obtained with these methods differs among twins. The sample consisted of 64 twin pairs: 21 monozygotic, 30 dizygotic same-sex and 13 dizygotic opposite-sex with at age range 5.8 - 22.6 years. Results showed that dental age of monozygotic twins is not identical even if they share all their genes. The mean intra-couple difference of monozygotic pairs was low and similar to the difference in dizygotic same-sex twins; the maximum difference between monozygotic twins however was surprisingly high (nearly two years). This study therefore sheds further light on the issue of genetics and the biology of aging.
