The chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the approach known as Axiomatic Functionalism originally developed by Jan Mulder in cooperation with Sandor Hervey. It explains its fundamental assumptions and its historical and philosophical background. It also outlines the axiomatic-functionalist view of language and evaluates works of numerous linguists who has contributed to the approach.
