Abstract
Studies comparing the Anglo-American academic style with the academic styles of Slavic languages suggest that English academic articles are more compact and contain simpler sentence structures than academic articles written in Slavic languages. The present study examines to what extent speakers of Czech and Slovak are influenced by the stylistic norms of their native languages in the process of writing academic texts in English. It compares the syntactic structures of English academic articles written by native speakers of English with those written by speakers of Czech and Slovak.
