So far, CEE countries have been used as transit areas rather than actual destinations for large numbers of immigrants. This, however, does not mean that the public domain is free from the discourses of discrimination and intolerance that tend to be associated with the issues of migration. Rather, such discourses are oriented towards different targets: groups of people from within the country who come to be redefined in various ways as outsiders or, less specifically, as the outgroup of “not Us”. The article considers the issue of racist discourse in the Czech media, drawing on material from recent news reports involving various outgroups. It is interested in the discursive construction, reconstruction and application of stereotypes and bias and their reflection through linguistic means. ER -
