In recent time transgender issues have been progressively more prominent in public discourse, accompanied by a rising push-back by conservative sectors. Such push-back usually entails the vilification and scapegoating of trans people as the responsible for a myriad of social problems. Specifically, in the current Trump administration both the president and FBI as well as numerous republican representatives have cataloged trans people as dangerous and “Nihilistic Violent Extremists”. With cases such as trying to typify them into official national enemies, trying to limit their access to guns (mind the US context and their devotion to firearms), and trying to connect them to the assassination of Charlie Kirk by any means possible. While some studies exist on the recent “anti-gender movement” such as Graff and Korolczuk’s “Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment” and Butler’s “Who's Afraid of Gender?” (2024); as well as other accounts of it through history such as Foucalt’s “The will to knowledge”, Kinsman’s “Whose National Security? Canadian State Surveillance and the Creation of Enemies Toronto: Between the Lines” (2000) and Serano’s “Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity”; these have not necessarily been made with a cultural sociology toolbox. Thus, giving the phenomenon the a cultural sociological approach could prove a fruitful endeavor.
