Thesis format: Policy paper. Aim of the thesis: The objective of the thesis is to identify the issue that has arisen during numerous peacekeeping missions carried out by the UN. The issue (sexual exploitation and abuse of women and children in countries where UN peacekeeping missions take place) as well as the context of the problem shall be analysed in great detail. The severity of the problem will then be demonstrated by the use of quantitative data gained from reliable and credible sources (e.g. sexual exploitation allegation statistics provided by the UN or various research reports that deal with the issue). Limitations of the thesis in terms of information and data availability will be determined (e.g. underreporting of sexual violence incidents). A number of feasible solutions to the problem will be defined (e.g. revision of the Memorandum of Understanding with troop contributing countries). These solutions will then be evaluated and the most viable one will be identified. Sources: Aoi, Ch., de Coning, C. and Thakur, R. (2007). Unintended consequences of peacekeeping operations.
