Seznam literatury a odkazů (citované a výchozí informační zdroje) My future bachelor thesis will be oriented towards the distinctions between the American and British English. First, I would like to focus on analysing the background, that includes the origin of the language, which would lead to explaining how the American variant developed. I would like to zero in mainly on these aspects; the pronunciation, the intonation and vocabulary including the spelling, on syntactic and linguistic differences. The means by which I can effectively compare these two languages in terms of above-mentioned viewpoints will be with the aid of two diverse situation comedies. I have decided to choose the popular ones which have almost the same duration and can be hopefully easily compared. The first is called Black Books, a British sitcom broadcasted since 2000, and the other, an American sitcom, which is currently very popular, is called The Big Bang Theory. I intend to fix my attention on approximately ten episodes of each sitcom and observe their similarities and distinctions, make a discourse analysis etc. As for sources, the practical ones are clear. For gaining the theory on which I will build my future research, so far I have some interesting and hopefully useful literature. It is English as a Global Language (second edition), The English language, A guided tour of the language, the Stories of English and The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English language, all by David Crystal. I am planning to go through them during forthcoming holidays and I am sure I will come up with another ideas how to deal with my bachelor thesis. Besides reading, I intend to fulfil the most pleasant part of my obligation, I will watch all the episodes of those two sitcoms to make sure I picked the most convenient for this mission. Since I employ an attractive method for doing my research, I expect to find working on my bachelor theisis not only instructive, but also quite enjoyable. Moreover, I still haven’t come across any book that would deal particularly with this issue, therefore, my bachelor thesis could turn out to be a nice summary. To sum up, the major objective of my bachelor thesis will be to obtain a complete and detailed idea of the areas where American and British English diverge and find out more about the history of this language.
