In her MA Thesis, the MA candidate shall examine the U.S.-Djibouti relations under the administrations of George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. She shall assess the issue at hand from the American perspective by examining the continuity and change of the U.S. foreign policy towards Djibouti in the selected period. To that end, the thesis shall provide an outline of the overall Africa policy of each administration (including its security, economic and humanitarian aspects) and examine how those aspects manifested themselves in the U.S. approach to Djibouti. The thesis shall also look at regional developments and involvement of other foreign actors in Djibouti (China in particular) and examine their connections to the U.S.-Djibouti relations. On the top of the strong economic ties, Djibouti became the first foreign country that hosts a permanent Chinese military base that is located in a close proximity to the only permanent American military base in Africa. This small African country may be situated far from both the U.S. and China, but it is becoming an increasingly notable focal point in their relations. This thesis will compare the strategies and the level of involvement of the United States and China in the Horn of Africa with special emphasis on the case of Djibouti. The thesis will further examine the role that the Horn of Africa and Djibouti in particular plays in the great power competition between the two countries and will analyze the implications of interactions between the U.S. and China in the region for their overall relations.
