The thesis shall provide a deep dive into the representation of non-binary (outside-the-binary) and trans (gendered) characters in a sapphic context. Working with the ever-present concept of intersectionality the crossing between feminism, lesbianism and trans studies shall be the theoretical basis for the analysis. Furthermore, the theoretical foundation shall be used to dissect a number of movies and tv shows (feel good, euphoria, gentleman jack, work In progress, danish girl, boy meets girl) with a non-binary/gender-non-conforming/genderqueer/trans character in a sapphic setting, placed in a leading role. Within the small pool of sapphic representation, the binary of the heterosexual backdrop shall be discussed as well as the limitation of the lesbian community, with shared obstacles of rigid binary in gender roles, male gaze, and archetypal representation. It will draw attention to socially enforced gender norms that can be found in lesbian relationships as well and will also look at the visual representation and self-representation through makeup (or the lack of it) clothing, manners, and verbal self-expression. Furthermore, it will examine the depiction of intimacy within the queer context.
