Ve své diplomové práci na téma "Presentation Scale Sentences in Fiction Narrative" provede studentka nejprve excerpci vět s takzvanou prezentační škálou a tyto věty bude v rámci vytvořeného korpusu klasifikovat. Dále se pak bude do podrobna zabývat syntakticko-sémantickou analýzou užitých prezentačních sloves, jejich typologií a klasifikací. Výsledky analýzy anglického textu budou funkčně porovnány se svými českými protějšky. The diploma thesis intends to draw on the Firbasian theory of FSP and its distinction between two basic types of dynamic semantic scales, reflecting the arrangement of sentence elements in terms of their communicative importance. The aim of the study is to analyze the function of the English verb operating in the so-called Presentation scale sentences within fiction narratives, focusing on both semantic and syntactic features of the verbs. Moreover, a comparison will be provided with the role of the Czech verb in Presentation scale sentences. For the purposes of the thesis, a sample corpus will be used, consisting of the full set of Presentation scale sentences excerpted from Ian McEwan’s novel Enduring Love (1997) and its Czech translation Nezničitelná láska. It is estimated that about 300 instances of Pr-sentences will be identified in each of the text versions. All the sentences (basic distributional fields) from the corpus will be subjected to an FSP analysis. The English sentences will be then classified into four syntactic subtypes as described by Adam (2010). Frequencies of the individual subtypes will be calculated. The study will also provide a similar typology of the Czech Pr-Scale sentences; special attention will be paid to the syntactic and semantic classification of the English and Czech Pr-verbs.
