The student will explore selected texts by A.C. Doyle and search in them for the reflection of the British Empire, its capital, its culture, lifestyle, science etc. The student will attempt to answer, among other, a question on How much we learn about the British Empire from the texts with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson? Which traces of naturalistic literary style are prominent in the texts? Which features make the texts instrumental for the early detective story?
