Abstract

This thesis aims to explore how Joyce’s work is influenced by religious philosophy. The focus will be to analyse the use of religious references throughout Joyce’s work, focusing particularly on Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses, to investigate whether these can shed light on a deeper meaning that Joyce is trying to convey. This thesis does not concern itself with whether God exists, or serve as a means to spread the religious doctrine. Rather it investigates the religious philosophical underpinning that inspired Joyce’s writing. This topic may be able to expand upon and deepen the themes and ideas Joyce is conveying in his work, and therefore act as a lens from which to view his esoteric works. …víceméně
