Native Canadian Literature is a world inhabited by supernatural creatures of all kinds, therefore the Western concept of "Gothic" is often used to categorize such texts where spectrality appears. However, the Canadian Native monsters, no matter whether they are domestic, imported or newly awakened, do not share the traditional characteristics of their European counterparts: Their role is not merely to scare people (at least not the Native ones) but primarily, they play an important part in overcoming the trauma of the problematic colonial past of the Canadian First Peoples, and by being the only true relics of the time when the Native identity was nothing but clear, their metaphorical appearance in the Native literature appeals to the revival of the traditions, return to the roots and necessity to pass the traditional values to the youngest generation. In order for the Native communities and their culture to be able to survive in the modernized and Westernized Canada of today, the supernatural creatures are their guides on the way to discover their Native identities. Moreover, spectrality is often used by the Native authors to reflect on some of the most problematic issues concerning the collective postcolonial trauma of the Native Peoples of Canada.
