The bachelor thesis examines the character of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and his views on slavery and racial issues. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to look at the person of Thomas Jefferson and his views on slavery and racial issues in the late 18th and early 19th century and analyze his beliefs about racial issues, liberty, and equality, and put them in the context of the newly formed nation. Jefferson’s book Notes on the State of Virginia is used as the primary source of information about his beliefs, particularly the chapters in which he expressed his views on racial issues, slavery, and individual liberty. The analysis in this thesis presents an insight into the character of Thomas Jefferson – a man of contradiction who dedicated his life to fight for liberty and justice yet believed that Whites and free Blacks could never co-exist.
