Patient empowerment can take many forms, but it is almost always related to the ability of patients to get relevant, accurate and actionable information about their diagnosis and treatment options. Such information leads not only to improving the mental comfort of the patients, but often also to more participatory approach and response to the treatment.
Any computational solution aiming at providing patients with empowering information is critically dependent on intuitive and comprehensive user interfaces, which motivates the work expected to be elaborated within this thesis.
Goals:
- Design the UX of AIcope, a system and a research project for cancer patient empowerment currently that aims at helping patients to gain better control over their treatment plan and improve their quality of life through facilitating access to information about cancer specifically relevant to them
- Co-design a web application with the research team:
* investigate the problem space, find related work on patient empowerment using knowledge graphs
* gather information about users
* gather and analyze user requirements
* summarize system functionality
- Create visual prototypes
- Implement a prototype of the application (the frontend of the system) using the latest technologies, particularly the frontend framework Vue.js, based on the previously selected design.
- Evaluate the prototypes with patients as the end-users, the research team, a UX professional, and choose the most suitable interface.
- Write up the results in a thesis form.
Requirements:
- Keen interest in the topic.
- Ability to read and comprehend scientific publications in English.
- Basic knowledge of computational biology, bioinformatics or medicine is a plus, but certainly not a must - the interest and willingness to learn are the only essential requirements, really.
- While the thesis can be written and defended in Czech, its elaboration and presentation in English will be supported enthusiastically.
- Monthly (or more frequent, if needed) progress review meetings with the supervisor will be expected.
- The student(s) will also be expected to develop and document any related code using the FI MU Gitlab platform, and (if applicable) re-use and interact with other related projects there.
