Sufism, as an inseparable dimension of the religion of Islam, has undertaken similar functions and carried out these tasks through sects. As a historical institution that has occupied an important place in socio-cultural life, sects are still important in contemporary Turkish society, attracting many members. Through a cultural sociological perspective, I analyze the layers of meaning behind the specific and social processes of joining sects. Through qualitative interviews, this thesis interrogates the meanings behind sects. My research explores what being a member of a sect means to members, the relationships between the members and the source of the strong bonds between them.
