Dealing with Legacy systems and Software Redesign

Anotace

Cílem práce je poskytnout přehled o tzv. legacy systémech, problémech, které jsou s nimi spojené a nabídnout strategie, které je možné implementovat při práci s těmito systémy. Součástí diplomové práce je představení a analýza legacy aplikace. Je vybrána vhodná strategie pro modernizaci této aplikace a jsou detailně popsány jednotlivé kroky modernizace.

Abstract

The aim of the thesis is to give an overview on legacy systems, the problems related to them and provide strategies that can be followed to effectively deal with them. As a part of the thesis, a legacy application is introduced, analyzed and evaluated. One of the strategies is chosen and followed to replace the legacy application with one that is easy-to-use and maintain.

There are many current software systems based on or containing legacy software. Over time, the systems’ complexity increases, and they become difficult and expensive to maintain.

The aim of the thesis is to define legacy systems and code, the problems related to legacy systems, give an overview of possible ways to work with and improve legacy systems, and give examples of tools that can be used to review code to prevent common mistakes that lead to technical debt, which makes legacy systems more difficult to deal with.

As a part of the thesis, the student will analyse a legacy application, define current requirements for its functionality and design a new version of the application. On samples of code from the new application, the student will show steps taken to make the new application easy-to-maintain, scalable and readable.
