European Union Approach towards further Western Balkan enlargement Case of Serbia

Anotace

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá témou potenciálneho budúceho rozšírenia EU o štáty Západného Balkánu. Práca podrobne rozoberá prípad Srbskej republiky.Práca je založená na teórii inštitucionalizmu a teorie racionálnej volby. Cieľom práce je priniesť všeobecnú analýzu rozširovacej politky EU v Srbsku.

Abstract

Presented master thesis is dealing with an issue of further enlargement of the EU in the region of Western Balkan. We will thoroughly analyse case of Serbia. Our methodology is base on theories of new institutionalism and rational choice. Main aim of the thesis is to brin overall analysis of enlargement policy of the EU in Serbia.

Thesis will be comprehensive analysis of EU approach towards further western Balkan enlargement. Negotiation process of chosen cases - Montenegro and Serbia will be analyzed. These particular cases are the only suitable options with focus on state of negotiations in the other countries in the region. Analysis within the negotiating chapters and different states will provide future perspectives and focal points for accessing states in the area of Western Balkan. Enlargement itself is lacking comprehensive theory and research. A lot has changed in comparison with Eastern enlargement. Mostly researched dimension of enlargement was macro dimension, this thesis will also incorporate substantive dimension analysis of the enlargement. Analysis of both dimension in chosen area provide comprehensive research and conclusions about EU approach towards Western Balkan enlargement. Even though theoretical basis for comprehensive enlargement studies lacks quantity of sources, with regards to the research of Eastern enlargement there is a possibility to formulate assumptions to the research. In case of macro dimension suggestion is for the constructivist approach to be presented. But not in the extent as it was during the Eastern enlargement. In substantive politics dimension rationalist approach is expected. Even though the Eastern enlargement research was an inspiration, this analysis won’t be comparative because of not bearable differences of the cases. Unique and specific analysis of the cases and the perspectives of the whole region is main aim of chosen research topic.
