Táto práca skúma rétorické prostriedky, ktorými sa u morálne ambivalentných rozprávačov v románoch Pan od Knuta Hamsuna, Lhář od Martina A. Hansena a Doktor Glas od Hjalmara Söderberga dosahuje efektu empatie alebo sympatie v rámci ich nespoľahlivého rozprávania. Hypotéza tejto práce znie, že všetky tri romány pracujú s koncepciou empatie/sympatie, angažovanosti čitateľov však dosahujú rozdielnymi formálnymi prostriedkami. Cieľom práce je analýza týchto formálnych prostriedkov vyvolávajúcich empatiu/sympatiu s využitím teoretických a terminologických nástrojov z oblasti rétoriky i naratológie.

This thesis examines the rhetorical devices used by the morally ambivalent narrators in Knut Hamsun's Pan, Martin A. Hansen's The Liar, and Hjalmar Söderberg's Doctor Glas to achieve the effect of empathy or sympathy within their unreliable narratives. The hypothesis of this thesis is that all three novels work with the concept of empathy/sympathy, but readers’ engagement is achieved through different formal devices. The aim of this thesis is to analyse these formal devices of eliciting empathy/sympathy using theoretical and terminological tools from both rhetoric and narratology.
