My Master thesis aims to explore the role which non-commercial ads play in order to empower women through their stylistic features, i.e., visual rhetoric, puns, semiology, metaphors, wordplay, emotive tools, gender indexing, establishing identity, and implicature. Typically, the main purpose of advertising is to persuade the audience, but not all adverts promote products for profitable reasons. The 21st century has witnessed a considerable number of awareness campaigns sponsored by international commodity brands and NGOs drawing attention to various challenges and issues faced by women of different cultural, economic and social backgrounds. This has led to the empowerment of women and a greater participation in contributing their stories within a wider social and political discourse. I am interested in how non-commercial advertisements incorporate stylistic and linguistic features in delivering these messages.
