The Employment of Fantasy Literature as a Tool for EFL Learning

Anotace

Tato závěrečná práce se zabývá možnostmi využití fantasy literatury ve výuce angličtiny jako cizího jazyka. Náplní práce bylo zjistit názory studentů na takovýto typ autentického materiálu a otestovat jeho využití v učitelské praxi. Ke sbírání názorů byl použit odpovědní formulář, hodiny jsou vedeny za využití Tolkienova „Hobita“. Hlavním cílem bylo pokusit se určit, zda je žánrová literatura vhodným doplňkem pro výuku.

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the possibility of usage of literature in the fantasy genre as authentic material in lessons of English as a foreign language (EFL). The aim is to collect student opinions and determine if further use of genre-specific literature can be beneficial for language learning. This is done through teaching lessons based on Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and the use of a questionnaire given to students at the end of the second lesson.

This thesis is focused on the usage of fantasy literature as a tool for teaching EFL and its place in the classroom according to student opinions. Through experimental research conducted via teaching literature-focused classes followed by a short questionnaire, this paper aims to present an overview of the students’ attitudes towards this type of authentic material as well as towards learning literature in their English classes. A secondary aim is to determine whether fantasy literature in particular could be seen as having a specific benefit – perhaps in holding the students’ attention better or helping in the development of key competences. The research is focused on the students’ responses in the provided questionnaire and the student teacher’s own reflection on the classes conducted for the purposes of this work.
