Abstract

This thesis examines the role of Christianity in the British Empire, contrasting its methods of religious propagation with those of other European powers, such as Spain and France. The British approach, characterized by a greater degree of cultural accommodation and decentralized missionary efforts, diverged significantly from the state-driven, coercive strategies employed by its European counterparts. This study explores how these distinct methods influenced the dynamics of colonization, fostering unique relationships between the British Empire and its colonial subjects. Furthermore, it investigates the long-term effects of this religious legacy on postcolonial relations between the United Kingdom and its former colonies, focusing on cultural, political, and social continuities and tensions that emerged following decolonization.
