The thesis focuses on analysing the views on and the portrayals of the Orient in Agatha Christie’s novels against the background of Edward Said’s Orientalism. The first chapter introduces Said’s work and notions; the second chapter focuses on the historical background of British colonization and the imperialist ideology that lied behind it. The third chapter illuminates the link between literature and culture and the impact that literature has had on people’s perception of the world. The fourth chapter analyses the representations of the Orient in the selected novels of Agatha Christie, which are namely Murder on the Orient Express (1934), Murder in Mesopotamia (1936), Death on the Nile (1937), Appointment with Death (1938), Death Comes as the End (1944), They Came to Baghdad (1951) and Destination Unknown (1954). All of the findings are then summarized in the final conclusion.
