This bachelor thesis is concerned with the topic of using bilingual books for vocabulary acquisition with regard to literary and language learning in learners of the English language. Three respondents, who have at least some knowledge of the English language and are capable of reading a book in that language, will be needed for the research. The research will be based on the work with these respondents and the tasks they will have, such as to read the book and take the test. The results of this test will be transferred into percentages and there will be a limit set for a successful passing of this test. Based on these results the whole thesis will be concluded. As an appropriate bilingual book I have chosen The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The aim of this thesis is to prove whether using bilingual books for vocabulary acquisition is appropriate or not. As the research method I have chosen the case study where I will work with three respondents whose task will be to read a part of a bilingual book. Based on a test they will take afterwards, or on an interview, I will assess whether reading the bilingual book has helped them with acquisition of the vocabulary used in the book. The test will be in the form of translating vocabulary or matching definitions. The test/interview will also consist of research questions aimed at how the respondents worked with the text. Such as which language part they read the most from, how much they were looking at the Czech part, whether they translated individual words with the use of dictionary or understood it from the context. The respondents will be given a language level test according to which the bilingual books will be distributed. The research will help me broaden my knowledge of using literary works for English language learning, which will be beneficial for my future teaching practice.
