The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse the way parenthood is depicted in Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse. It will try to answer the question to what extent does the model of family depicted there fit into the traditional image of family at the time, into the context of other Woolf’s novels and into the idea of To the Lighthouse being an autobiography. The first chapter will deal with the image of family in the United Kingdom during the lifetime of Woolf’s parents and during her life, and its transformation from Victorian ideal into the modern family of 20th century. It will also mention family life of Stephen’s family and often nonstandard families of members of the Bloomsbury group. The second chapter will show how Woolf dealt with topics of family and parenthood in her other novels. The last chapter will concentrate on the characters of Ramsays as parents, the character of their relationship with children, and on autobiographical aspect of the novel.
