This diploma thesis will focus on the educational system of the Indian Residential Schools in Canada. It will shortly explain what were the reasons for the foundation of the residential schools in the first place and it will also present brief history, conditions and daily life of the schools. The main part of the thesis will then focus on the negative impacts the schools have had on the survivors and the Indigenous communities in general (such as for example an increased prevalence of violence, alcoholism, suicides, and substance abuse at the reserves in Canada). The analytical part of the thesis will then examine three selected artistic works by Indigenous authors and will explore the ways in which the issue of Indian Residential School System is depicted in them.
