Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to draw on the concept of eleven distinct nations recognized within the United States, analyze the two of them dating back to the 17th-century colonial America – Yankeedom and Tidewater, and examine how the nationality of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe, writers belonging, respectively, to these particular nations, is manifested in their work. Zadání práce
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the genesis and attributes of these two nations and examine how does the nationality of the well-known authors Nathaniel Hawthorne (Yankeedom) and Edgar Allan Poe (Tidewater) manifest in their work. I will discuss and compare the two nations in the context of the 17th century while focusing on the cultural, political, religious, economic and social aspects of the colonies. Moreover, these aspects shall be further reflected in the analysis of The House of the Seven Gables and The Fall of the House of Usher which will not be approached as the works of Gothic literature but as works belonging to the sphere of Yankeedom and Tidewater.
