Abstract

The scope of this thesis is to examine the dominant cultural movements of the 14th century -knighthood, chivalry and feudalism- as reflected in the tale of ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight'. Using a qualitative method, the main focus is to analyse the tale and explore those themes. This thesis highlights that symbols like the girdle, the pentangle or even the interactions of the characters reflect societal ideals. Moreover, the tale incorporates supernaturality and temptation to highlight the significance of the strict moral codes of the era, which is a phenomenon highly discussed in this dissertation. By stating those findings, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of Medieval society and societal expectations, specifically those of the 14th century. …víceméně
