The unexpected victory of the Leave campaign in 2016 in/out referendum in the United Kingdom shocked the whole world and its implications continue to reverberate ever since. This thesis deals with the 2016 in/out referendum campaign in the United Kingdom. It is conceived of as a literature review and its aim is to evaluate the extant literature on the referendum campaign. It explores not only the main topics foregrounded in the current literature but also engages with the main research methods and theoretical approaches employed by researchers who deal with this topic area. At the same time, the thesis is concerned with the strengths and weaknesses of the current research and suggests areas for future potential research avenues.
