This research examines the integration of Kurdish second-generation migrants in Germany, focusing on the relationship between transnational practices and the process of integration. Challenging classical assimilation theories that assume a linear detachment from the country of origin, this study adopts a transnational perspective to argue that integration and transnational ties are not mutually exclusive but coexist and shape one another. Drawing on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with six Kurdish second-generation individuals in Cologne, the research explores how participants construct identity, belonging, and social positioning across multiple social spaces. The findings reveal that participants experience hybrid identities and forms of partial belonging, navigating between Kurdish cultural practices within family and community contexts and functional adaptation to German institutional life. Language, cultural practices, and transnational connections emerge as key mechanisms through which identity and belonging are negotiated. Furthermore, the study highlights how boundary-making processes, including symbolic exclusion and perceptions of “otherness,” influence integration outcomes despite high levels of structural participation. Rather than hindering integration, transnational ties often provide social support, cultural continuity, and a sense of belonging. Overall, the research demonstrates that integration is a dynamic, non-linear, and multi-sited process shaped by transnational social fields, hybrid identities, and ongoing negotiations of inclusion and exclusion in the host society.
