The primary aim of the thesis is to describe recent transformations and uses of the concept of the Panopticon in social theory. The primary aim of the thesis is to describe recent transformations and uses of the concept of Panopticon in social theory. The shifts in meanings and in use of the term will be interpreted with regard to particular technological and social changes, such as changes in surveillance practices and social control. The aim is to identify how the concept of Panopticon changed and to assess its relevance and analytical potential in theorising "information age" and in researching new media like web 2.0. The student will base his/her work on critical reading of the concept of Panopticon as introduced by Michel Foucault. Then s/he will confront the uses of the concept (and its variations) by other authors and their more recent works.
