In a highly individualized society characterized by instability, insecurity, high flexibility and the lack of solid social ties, sometimes called “risk society” (Beck 1992) or “liquid modernity” (Bauman 2000), or lately “network sociality” (Wittel 2001), impersonal relationships prevail and individuals seek places of “authenticity” in reaction (Osbaldiston 2012). This thesis examines a work life sphere, in particular a concrete workspace called Impact Hub Brno that represents a place which attempts to negotiate two contradictory demands by merging them together – maintaining individual freedom and at the same time, experiencing community. Moreover, the author demonstrates how the notion of “authenticity” is a significant factor in this negotiation process. The analytical strategy draws on a cultural sociological approach that considers culture as analytically autonomous in order to access deeper meaning structures (Alexander and Smith 2003). The analysis is focused on the reconstruction of cultural meanings present in the common discourse among people who work in this workspace.
