Research indicates that dissociative phenomena are significantly associated with complex traumatic experiences, both in somatoform and psychoform manifestations. Dissociations might represent various challenges in a therapeutic process, hindering psychological contact with the therapist that is required to create a therapeutic alliance and integrate difficult emotions. Research further suggests that affective and relational disturbances – both often naturally present in the therapeutic process - are strongly related to dissociations in clients with complex trauma. The Person-Centred Approach, building upon empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence, seems to carry a great potential for effective treatment of clients who have experienced persistent trauma, particularly through establishing a safe and trustworthy relationship, which can positively affect clients’ maladaptive coping strategies (such as dissociation) in the face of disturbing thoughts or emotions. Considering the lack of research focused on the issue, this study aims to explore the dissociative phenomena within PCA therapeutic work with clients who have been through complex traumatic experiences. A small sample (3-6) of semi-structured interviews will be conducted and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. This method enables in-depth exploration of PCA therapists’ experiences that might bring new insights into dissociation linked to complex trauma and effective therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, it might carry the potential for future research addressing C-PTSD, which nowadays rapidly asks for more attention.
