Thesis description
In the 2016 referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership in the European Union, the Remain campaign was notoriously labeled as the Project Fear by its opponents and in media coverage, meaning that the Remainers were using predominantly negative arguments about the consequences of leaving the EU as their main strategy. Yet, my previous research has shown prevailing positive connotations in the David Cameron’s speeches. Building on my bachelor’s thesis, the aim of this thesis is to analyse the speeches of the three leading Remainers: David Cameron, George Osborne, and Jeremy Corbyn, and identify to which extent they really corresponded with the Project Fear notion. To that end, the thesis combines two methods: content analysis to identify in which areas negative connotations prevailed and discursive analysis to provide deeper insight into the language of these politicians.
