The process of European integration has been one of the main foreign policy goals of South-Eastern European states since the end of the Cold War. Some managed to join in due time, while others in the so called “Western Balkans” region have been struggling to do so for over 2 decades. Main players in the integration sphere are currently Serbia & Montenegro, with Serbia taking the forefront as the largest and politically most influential state in the former Yugoslav region which does have a membership promise from Brussels. However, the path towards this membership is long, treacherous and Serbia’s geopolitical challenges stemming from the turbulent past, political as well as economic instability, and finally the territorial problems with its breakaway province of Kosovo have shown as overwhelmingly significant challenges for a country to overcome. The central aim of the thesis is to conduct a critical analysis and examination on the issue of Serbia’s struggle to achieve the EU membership since the early 2000’, in order to successfully finish the process of political Europeanization of its internal structures shown through research and contemporary literature on the topic. Moreover, it will focus on analyzing the missing aspects in the description of problems that the country is facing for a better understanding at of issue at hand, as well as in the aforementioned literature and extended research.
