CopAS - the Modular Data Analytics Tool

Bc. Ondřej Machala
Anotace

Abstract

This thesis presents a new version of the data-analytical tool CopAS. CopAS combines several other tools to analyze mainly network traffic and CSV files. As it grew over the years of development, the tool became bloated, and issues with its extensibility to new data-analytical use cases emerged. The thesis results in a set of developed software components that together form the new modular architecture of CopAS, allowing easier extension with new data-analytical use cases.

Zadání práce
The CopAS data-analytics tool is a simple, container-oriented tool for easy implementation of data analysis tasks, integrating the Elasticsearch (Kibana, Logstash) and Arkime analytics tool environments, and focused on the analysis of network capture (PCAP) data and large CSV files.
This thesis aims to revise its architecture to become a modular, data-analytic solution, usable, among others, in the environment of the security forces of the Czech Republic. In addition to upgrading the control scripts and designing and implementing its modular architecture (with the possibility of building private registries of data-analytic modules), the student's task is to design and implement a suitable web environment template of individual analytical modules so that they use a unified user interface for the configuration and management of the implemented data analysis. In the practical part of the work, the student will prototype and demonstrate the developed modular solution on at least three different analytical modules located in a private registry. In the thesis text, the student will describe in detail the proposed architecture of the tool and instructions for its deployment, including the preparation of private registries and the architecture and programming interfaces of the unified user environment of the analytical modules and instructions for creating new ones.
Given the ambition of production deployment of the developed system in the environment of the security forces of the Czech Republic, the system will be designed, described, and implemented with an emphasis on the simplicity and intuitiveness of its use and according to the standards of modern application development to support its long-term sustainability and further development.
