This thesis discusses the spaces and places present in the novels Bless me, Ultima (1972) by Rudolfo Anaya and The House on Mango Street (1983) by Sandra Cisneros. This thesis illustrates that the protagonists’ relationships to the spaces and places in the novels Bless me, Ultima (1972) by Rudolfo Anaya and The House on Mango Street (1983) by Sandra Cisneros are a major influence for the protagonists in their coming of age and that these relationships prompt the protagonists to dream about different future paths than the ones that are typical in their families and social circles. This thesis analyzes the spaces and places of the novels and the protagonists' relationships to them with Yi-Fu Tuan’s theory from his book Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience (1977) and with the concept of otherness in mind.
