The thesis is concerned with the assimilation policy designed to civilize Native Americans in the 19th century. It briefly explains the roots of the policy, the development of educational institutions and the beginnings of the boarding school system. The core of the thesis deals with the methods used at these institutions and examines both immediate and long-term negative impacts they had on Native Americans. The last part is devoted to Indian resistance and asks whether the assimilating goals were accomplished or not.
