The cohabitation of many various cultures in Western European countries forms a need for reworking the way in which we use the concept of ethnicity. The right approach to the schema, in which contradictory concepts of the ‘good way of life’ are claimed, is still to be found. Although multiculturalism as an ideological project has been officially abandoned by the Governments of those countries, the phenomena associated with unrestricted cultural policies of last few decades, such as ethnic struggles against the culture and habits of local people or the refusal of submitting to local law, are apparent. This thesis aims to examine the basics of multicultural idea, reveal and explain the essential discrepancies of its demands in the boundaries of a legal state regarding ‘recognition’ (in Charles Taylor’s sense) and special treatment of the members of immigrant cultures. It will also link these theoretical arguments with specific examples from the environment of Western Europe. The country of interest is mostly Great Britain, followed by France, Germany and Netherlands as they are the major representatives of immigrant states.
